President Joe Biden tore into former President Donald Trump on Thursday after the 2024 GOP frontrunner’s off-the-rails address at the Palm Beach County Convention Center Wednesday night, in which Trump offered words of praise for Hezbollah.
Hezbollah, an Iran-linked militant group deemed a terrorist organization by the United States, is actually “very smart,” Trump said multiple times during his remarks.
“I said, wait a minute. You know, Hezbollah is very smart. They’re all very smart,” Trump said during the rally, adding, “The press doesn’t like it” when he says those things. In his speech, Trump also slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose country is still reeling from the Hamas terror attack that left 1,200 dead.
Trump in the past has received criticism for praising other brutal global actors who have targeted civilians, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s President Xi Jinping.
Biden retweeted a clip of Trump making the remarks and wrote, “Our nation’s support for Israel is resolute and unwavering. And the right time to praise the terrorists who seek to destroy them is never.”
White House senior communications adviser Andrew Bates told Mediaite in a statement why Biden is commenting on Trump’s remarks:
We don’t comment on 2024. Statements like this are dangerous and unhinged. It’s completely lost on us why any American would ever praise an Iran-backed terrorist organization as “smart.”
Or have any objection to the United States warning terrorists not to attack Israel. Especially now as Israel is fighting back against one of the worst acts of mass murder in the country’s history. This is a time for all of us to stand shoulder to shoulder with Israel against “unadulterated evil.” That’s what the President is doing as commander in chief.
